The Ambassador of Ukraine to the United States, Olga Stefanishyna, reported that Kyiv maintains a constant dialogue with the US Congress regarding the corruption scheme in the energy sector, which was recently exposed by Ukrainian law enforcement officers.
The diplomat said this in an interview with NBC News.
During the conversation, the presenter asked a question about the “scandal related to the administration of President Zelenskyi” and specified what explanation Ukraine plans to provide to American lawmakers, who may use the situation as an argument against continuing aid to Kyiv.
“We are, of course, in contact with a wide range of members of Congress and the Senate. We have provided the latest updates,” Stefanishyna said.
According to her, the investigation concerns two government officials who are not directly subordinate to the head of state.
The ambassador emphasized that less than a day after the scheme was made public, President Volodymyr Zelenskyi initiated their removal: the officials were asked to resign, they were temporarily suspended, and next week the parliament will consider the issue of their official dismissal. Sanctions were applied to the other participants.
“We consider it important that an effective institutional system works in Ukraine, and there is no place for impunity. This is an unpleasant situation, but it has never happened in the history of Ukraine. This means that the anti-corruption mechanisms we have created really work,” the diplomat concluded.
It will be recalled that the European Commission also stated that the exposure of the corruption scheme demonstrates the effectiveness of Ukrainian anti-corruption bodies.
