Interestingly, about 90 percent of ice giants are hidden under water.
What we see above the surface is only a small part of the iceberg / photo REUTERSIcebergs are ice giants, the main source of which is the Antarctic, are the size of a car or a house, and sometimes reach the scale of an entire city or country.
This was reported at the National Antarctic Scientific Center. Ukrainian researchers have made and released a video showing ice giants resembling a fantasy movie trailer.
It is said that the largest recorded iceberg in the world – B-15 – had an area of about 11 thousand square meters. kilometers This is equal to the territory of Qatar or the island of Jamaica. In 2000, it broke away from Antarctica and then broke up into smaller parts.
“It is interesting that approximately 90 percent of the iceberg is hidden under water. What we see above the surface is only a small part. This is where the famous expression ‘the tip of the iceberg’ comes from,” the scientists note.
Iceberg newsWe will remind you that earlier Ukrainian polar explorers published a photo of an iceberg that looked like a white sandwich with a blue layer. According to scientists, once upon a time, this iceberg was part of a glacier on land, and then a crack formed in it, which was filled with melt water and froze.
This is exactly what the blue stripe is. Then the crack ran vertically, but then the piece broke off and turned over. This assumption is confirmed by faint stripes on the white part – firn ice.
It is formed by layering of snow, which under the influence of its own weight is compressed to the structure of porous chocolate, with closed air bubbles. Probably, the mother glacier of the “sandwich” was slow-moving, because the cracks of such glaciers have a greater tendency to seal. Therefore, the water that filled the crack did not flow out, but had time to freeze and firmly glue the split halves of the “sandwich”.
