Today, November 12 Eastern Catholic Churches (especially UGCC) honor memory of the holy martyr Josaphat, archbishop of Polotsk. He gave his life for the unity of the Church.
Yosafata Kuntsevich (ca. 1580–1623) was born in Volodymyr-Volynskyi , entered the Basilian monastery in Vilnius . There he is became famous as a great ascetic, preacher and reformer of monastic life.
In 1617, he became the archbishop of Polotsk. Saint Josaphat was a zealous supporter of the Brest Union (unification of the Kyiv Metropolitanate with the Catholic Church). His activities caused strong opposition, and on November 12, 1623, he was killed by opponents of the Union in Vitebsk. His martyrdom strengthened the position of the Union Church, and he was canonized in 1867.
