The attackers send out SMS fake on behalf of Binance and urge users to transfer funds to a final address, referring to the alleged risk of hacking hackers Lazarus Group. This was reported by Hong Kong Web3-enthusiast and entrepreneur Joe Zhou.
The entrepreneur received a message on behalf of Binance from the same number from which the verification codes usually came. He was warned about the entry into the account from the device in North Korea.
Zhou called the proposed number and got the instructions to create a new wallet in the Safepal service and withdraw funds from Binance allegedly at the time of investigation of the incident.
The user listened to the instructions and began to transfer assets. In the process, he asked about the situation from a familiar employee of the exchange and realized that he had got to the fraudsters who had access to the wallet.
Zhou had time to withdraw some of the money until the attackers realized that they had been opened. He was not enough to pay for the last transaction, the hackers managed to bring a little ETH to the wallet and pick up the remaining tokens.
According to the victim, as a result, financial losses were minimal and paid for “another good lesson”. He reported law enforcement officers and the exchange team of fraudulent activity.
A number of Linkedin users replied Zhou that they received similar messages. Not everyone was warned about attempting access to the DPRK – one of the commentators wrote about the entrance from Paris.
In November 2024, fake SMS were sent to customers from Europe on behalf of Binance. The attackers reported safety problems and offered users to get the money “to a reliable place” – to a false wallet.
