Italy Prime Minister George Meloni said that the most effective security guarantees for Ukraine are NATO membership.

Details: Meloni said that, among other things, she discussed an effort with a Swedish colleague to “lay the foundations of just and long peace in Ukraine.”

“This goal can only be achieved if you have adequate safety guarantees so that we have seen for the last three years, and that the European countries that feel the most threat can be safe instead,” the Head of Government of Italy said.

She noted that such guarantees “should be implemented in the context of the Atlantic Alliance.”

“Therefore, I think it is the best structure for guaranteeing peace that is neither fragile nor temporary, and which prevents the risk that Europe can soon slip into the drama of war,” Melny said.

According to her, other security guarantees “seem to me more complex and, frankly, less effective.”

Italy’s premiere, which has established a good relationship with Donald Trump, has commented on the efforts of his administration in recent weeks to the end of the war against Ukraine.

• On February 26, US President Donald Trump stated that, within the future agreement on the “termination of the war” in Ukraine, he excludes the possibility of its membership in NATO. He also said that the reason for the full -scale invasion of Russia into Ukraine was allegedly the Alliance, namely, the promise that Ukraine will once become its member.
• Earlier, US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegset also excluded Ukraine’s membership in NATO as part of the “peaceful settlement” of the war.
• Ukraine, meanwhile, continues to insist that it does not change the position on membership in the North Atlantic Alliance.
