Romanian authorities have begun recounting votes after an election that shook the country’s political establishment with the victory of a little-known ultra-nationalist candidate. In addition, the Constitutional Court of the country can decide to cancel the first round of presidential elections and re-appoint it.

Recounting of votes after the first round of presidential elections has started in Romania. The Constitutional Court in Bucharest ordered a recount on Thursday after security officials said the first round of the presidential election had been marred by a cyber operation carried out on the social media platform TikTok. Romania’s electoral body said the recount could only be completed by 10 p.m. on Sunday, November 1.

The head of the Permanent Electoral Body, Tony Greble, said on Friday that if the Constitutional Court decides to annul the first round of the presidential election, the election will resume with all the candidates who were registered in the first round.

If the first round is repeated, all those whose candidacy has been confirmed and registered take part, they are all registered on the ballot, regardless of their applications

Some experts talk about undermining democracy. They note that the vote recount is not transparent (observers were not allowed to participate), and further turbulence on the political scene could lead to the strengthening of anti-establishment nationalists or provoke mass protests in the country.

We will remind

UNN previously reported that independent candidate Celin Giorgescu, known for criticizing the EU and supporting Ukraine, is in the lead after the first round of elections in Romania. In the second round, he will compete with Prime Minister Marcel Čolaku.

Romanian Prime Minister Marcel Čolaku, who was predicted to win the presidential election, was eliminated in the first round, which forced him to resign as leader of the Social Democrats.

Far-right politician Celin Georgescu won about 23% of the vote in the first round of the presidential election in Romania. Georgescu, known for his pro-Russian views, has previously criticized NATO and supported Putin.
