Verbatim intelligence: “The use of this experimental system against Ukraine was almost certainly intended to send a strategic message after Ukraine launched Western missiles into Russia.”

Details: The Ministry reminded that in February 2019, Russia announced its withdrawal from the Treaty on the Elimination of Medium- and Short-Range Missiles, which prohibited the development and production of these missiles. But intelligence officers believe that the development of “Oreshnik” almost certainly took place before that.

According to British analysts, this system is probably a variant of the Rubezh RS-26 ballistic missile, which was first tested in 2011.

They believe that Russia has only a few Oreshnik missiles, which are yet to be put into mass production.

Intelligence also emphasizes that this missile will most likely be much more expensive than other missiles that Russia is currently firing at Ukraine.

Prehistory:

  • President Volodymyr Zelenskyi believes that currently the head of the Kremlin, Vladimir Putin, is “wielding his Oreshnik” so that the newly elected US President Donald Trump does not succeed in ending the Russian-Ukrainian war.
  • The day before, Zelenskyi and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte discussed the specific needs of Ukraine in air defense systems against the background of the recent Russian strike with a new ballistic missile.
  • There was also a meeting of the Ukraine-NATO Council due to Russia’s use of Oreshnik.
