The local club of the same name hosted the Italian Roma this time, and in addition to the famous names of the teams, the Ukrainian fan was interested in the participation of our striker Artem Dovbyk in this game as part of the “wolves”, who are still trying to get used to working under the tools of the third head coach in the current season. Claudio Ranieri already had a test in the championship in the form of Napoli, and now the highly experienced specialist was expected by “Spurs” with a very demanding Ange Postecoglou.
After their second win of the season against Manchester City, Tottenham were on a roll. Therefore, from the very first minutes, the hosts rushed to the other side’s goal and quite quickly found the weakest link in Roma’s defense this evening – Mats Hummels, who played for the first time in the starting lineup of the new club, but will remember this game for a long time in a negative context. Except for one episode at the end, but we will talk about everything in turn.
The German was simply not noticed by his opponents, each of whom was trivially faster on his feet than a football player of his age. In the fourth minute, Roma were awarded a penalty when Mats did not have time to play on the ball in the left corner of his own goal and brought down Sarr. Son put Spurs ahead with a kick in the right corner, so Postecoglou’s team executed a small part of their plan almost immediately.
The hosts would like to continue attacking, which is quite understandable, but Ranieri’s team are no longer toothless wolves, but quite dangerous predators. So Roma snapped. And even so, that the stands of the opponents’ stadium fell silent in literally two minutes in the middle of the first half. First, Dybala delivered a free-kick from the left wing to the head of Ndik, who hit it under the crossbar, and then Paulo could have assisted the left-wing free-kick on El Shaarawi, if he had not gone a little offside.
The challenge to Postecoglou’s team was abandoned. And she accepted him with an open heart. Tottenham gave the opponents a very “fun” end to the first half in the foreign penalty area, when “Spurs” could score a considerable number of goals, but limited themselves only to Kulusevski’s cross from the left wing to Johnson. Guess who this pass was made from? Of course Mats…
However, a football match is not limited to only one half, and this time Tottenham forgot about it a little. Postecoglou’s team failed at the beginning of the second half, and if Dovbyk had not been in such a hurry to complete such rare, but so desirable for him, transfers from his partners from the flanks, then he could have counted on at least a goal + an assist, or even a double, if Kone had missed the m’ yach in the first of the episodes. But what are we talking about if the Ukrainian constantly climbed to the offsides at the same time.
And then there was another Roma hit on the crossbar this season with Angelinho’s effort, and a similar response from Porro in Tottenham’s next attack. Solanke then joined in knocking on the frame of the other side’s goal, while Kulusevski initiated this action in the first half. All in all, it was just fun – not a match for a neutral fan, but a fairy tale on a Thursday evening.
And since there should be a little bit of witchcraft in every fairy tale, the ugly duckling in the center of Roma’s defense suddenly turned into, if not a swan, then at least the savior of his team. Yes, Hummels spent the last few minutes almost constantly in someone else’s penalty area. Probably felt that Angelinho would finally make a normal cross in this game and it could still be completed. Unlike Dovbyk, who has not been hit with the ball since the beginning of the season, at least Mats scored.
In the next round, London’s Tottenham will visit Scotland’s Rangers, while Italy’s Roma will host Portugal’s Braga.
