Environmentalists expressed concern about the lack of practical steps on the part of the IAEA, despite previous agreements. Back in September, the agency’s director general, Rafael Grossi, agreed to expand inspections to include electrical substations, which are often the targets of Russian shelling.
It is noted that despite the agency’s promise, only six days of inspections were conducted in three months, the last of which took place in October 2024. During this period, Russia carried out two massive strikes, threatening the stability of the Ukrainian energy system and the safety of nuclear facilities.
The IAEA is fully aware of the danger, but has yet to take any real action. The future that Grossi speaks of is already here, and the situation is extraordinary, where every hour counts. Words cannot save Ukraine’s nuclear power plants from the threat of missile strikes. Where are the agency’s concrete plans to comprehensively protect critical infrastructure and prevent a potential nuclear disaster?
The environmental organization called on the agency to immediately implement its promises and take measures to protect Ukrainian nuclear power plants, which are at constant risk due to Russia’s aggressive actions.
