Before his death in prison, Russian opposition leader Oleksii Navalny had symptoms of poisoning, as evidenced by documents accessed by the Russian publication The Insider. The newspaper reports that the mention of symptoms that are not included in the official version of the politician’s death have been removed from the later versions of the documents.
“As doctors confirm, these symptoms clearly indicate that Navalny was poisoned,” the publication said.
The publication writes that it has received access “to hundreds of official documents related to the death of Oleksiy Navalny”, including two versions of the resolution on the refusal to initiate a criminal case, signed by Major of Justice Oleksandr Varapayev.
In an earlier version, it is said that on February 16, 2024, while in the promenade, Navalny felt unwell, “which he informed the on-duty employee of the institution, who took the latter from the premises of the promenade to the premises of section No. 4 of the ЕПКТ”.

The Insider emphasizes that in the later version of the same decision, which became final, Navalny’s stomach pain, vomiting and convulsions were not mentioned.
The publication writes that it also has a description “of removed objects”, where they appear “vomitus samples’ that were submitted for examination, although neither the vomiting nor the examination was officially reported.
The article notes that these documents confirm the words of Yulia Navalny, who previously stated that “in the last minutes before his death, he (Oleksiy Navalnyi — ed.) complained of a sharp pain in his stomach.”
Intensivist Oleksandr Polupan, who treated Navalny in an Omsk hospital after he was poisoned by Novachko in 2020, told The Insider that the symptoms indicated in the documents contradict the official version of the politician’s death.
“The official cause of death – irregular heart rhythm – would not explain the symptoms we see in the decision: sharp pain in the stomach, vomiting and convulsions. It is unlikely that such symptoms can be explained by anything other than poisoning. A short period of time between the abdominal pain and the convulsions suggests that it could have been, for example, an organophosphorus substance (Novachok also belongs to the same class of substances, but not when applied topically, but when applied internally), he said.
The publication writes that other doctors of various specialties interviewed by him agree with this conclusion.
“Other facts also testify in favor of the use of a poisonous substance: the authorities did not hand over the body for a long time and did not allow an alternative examination of biomaterials to be carried out. However, only now the fact of poisoning has been documented,” the publication concludes.
The death of Alexei Navalny
On February 16, 2024, the Russian authorities announced the death of 47-year-old oppositionist Oleksii Navalny on the territory of a colony in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous District in the Far North of the Russian Federation.
Navalny’s team stated that in the medical report on death, which was shown to his mother Lyudmila Navalny, the cause of death was called natural. Navalny spent the last three years in prison.
He was buried on March 1 at the Borisovsky Cemetery in Moscow.
On August 15, 2024, Oleksiy Navalny’s widow, Yulia Navalny, reported that in correctional colony No. 3 of the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous District, they declared that the politician’s death was caused by “combined disease” and refused to conduct an investigation.
According to her, she received the first and only official document revealing the cause and circumstances of the oppositionist’s death only six months after his death.
According to the version of the Investigative Committee, Navalny’s death occurred as a result “combined disease”, in particular “hypertensive disease with vascular and organic lesions”, “diffuse myocardiosclerosis with complications in the form of cerebral edema”, “ventricular fibrillation” and “pulmonary edema”. Among the causes of death, arrhythmia is also indicated. In total, the document lists about ten different medical diagnoses.
According to copies of the documents, the Investigative Committee did not find Navalny dead “events of the crime” and refused to conduct an investigation. The resolution is dated July 26, 2024.
“Oleksiy Navalny was in the SHIZO cell. At 12.10 he was taken out for a walk. During it, he became ill, he was “placed” in the infirmary, and he died there. The ambulance arrived, but was unable to do anything, at 2:17 p.m. death was confirmed,” the oppositionist’s widow relayed the contents of the document.
She believes that this is not true and that the investigation is hiding the events that took place on the day of Navalny’s death.
“We are well aware that when Oleksiy became ill, he was taken not to the infirmary, but back to the SHIZO cell. That he was dying there, alone,” said Yulia Navalna.
She also claims that the politician was taken to the infirmary already unconscious, and in the last minutes before his death he complained of acute pain in his stomach.
