The UN Security Council needs a deep reform, which will involve expanding the number of its members and making changes to the right of veto.

As the Ukrinform correspondent reports, Prime Minister of Portugal Luis Montenegro said this during his speech at the UN General Assembly.

“We support reforming the UN Security Council to make it more representative, flexible and functional. Its composition is outdated and the lack of representation of some regions hinders its activities,” said Montenegro.

He noted that Portugal “supports the Common Position of Africa and the aspirations of Brazil and India to become permanent members.” “Small and medium-sized countries, including small island states, should also strengthen their representation,” the Prime Minister noted.

And that’s how it should be used,” he emphasized.

We will remind: earlier a similar statement about the need to reform the UN Security Council was made by the President of the European Council, Charles Michel.

As reported, the 79th session of the UN General Assembly continues in New York. The theme of this year’s high-level debate is “Leaving no one behind: acting together for peace, sustainable development and human dignity for present and future generations”.
