Ireland’s Data Protection Commission has fined Meta 91 million euros ($101.5 million) for improperly storing some users’ passwords in an insecure manner.
The investigation was initiated five years ago after Meta self-reported an incident involving the storage of passwords in “clear text” to the DPC. The company confirmed that the passwords were not accessible to third parties, but this did not relieve it of responsibility.
